POSITION PURPOSE
Repairs and services heavy equipment, trucks, tractors, mowers, plant vehicles, gas and diesel powered compressors, mobile gas and diesel powered generators, stationary diesel generators, mobile gas and diesel pumps, maintains oil and fuel inventory, completes shop cleaning, and is responsible for incidental tasks and light maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Contribute to safe and efficient operation of the applicable facility by keeping work area, heavy equipment, plant vehicles (trucks, tractors, forklifts, JLG's, etc.), and tools maintained.
- Perform service, maintenance, and cleaning on vehicles and equipment, as assigned; and assist in maintaining proper records to ensure all equipment is in sound operating condition.
- Stay abreast of all pertinent work changes. Operate heavy equipment and vehicles to troubleshoot for repairs and to test after repairs have been made.
- Safely rig for lifting equipment components.
- Contribute to effective utilization of manpower by training fellow workers in proper servicing and maintenance techniques.
- Perform miscellaneous cutting and welding on all mobile equipment.
- Perform cleaning duties, as assigned, in a manner which does not interfere with normal operating procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A two year vocational or technical program in heavy equipment maintenance, diesel technology, or a related field, and 5 years of experience as a journeyman heavy equipment/mobile equipment mechanic in a mining, construction, industrial, or similar heavy equipment environment; or
- A high school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED) and 7 years of experience diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing heavy mobile equipment, preferably in mining, construction, aggregates or other heavy industrial operations.
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and repairing diesel and gasoline-powered equipment, hydraulic systems, powertrain components, electrical systems, and related heavy equipment.
- Experience working with Caterpillar (CAT) equipment, including proficiency in Caterpillar diagnostic software and advanced troubleshooting of mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems.
- A valid Driver’s license.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
Operation of tools and equipment, and perform mechanical/electrical maintenance on vehicles, trucks, mobile equipment, air tools, generators, pumps, tractors, etc. This position requires finger dexterity, good color vision/hearing, the ability to perform close work, and the ability to speak. This position also frequently works in extreme cold and around electrical risks; and occasionally around fumes, chemicals, oils, fuels, extreme heat, vibration, noise, poor ventilation, in confined areas, and at heights up to 20 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with ANSI Z359 standards. This position must be respirator qualified. This position requires continuous standing/walking; frequent lifting/carrying up to 30 pounds; and occasional lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 25 pounds, sitting, bending/reaching, climbing.
KEY SKILLS
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and repairing diesel and gasoline-powered equipment, hydraulic systems, powertrain components, electrical systems, and related heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of parts and service manuals, and computer-based programs to troubleshoot operating problems.
- Proficient with personal computers and Microsoft Word and Outlook.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- The incumbent may be required to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
