Job Description: 

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is located at our Headquarters location in Bismarck, ND.

The Director of Generation Excellence will drive the productivity, reliability, and efficiency of power generation facilities. This role oversees and coordinates generation outage planning/execution and fleetwide continuous improvement efforts. This position also leads benchmarking opportunities, cross-functional alignment, and the implementation of best practices to enhance overall operational performance.
 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Productivity:

  • Develop and implement strategies to improve productivity across power generation facilities.
  • Monitor and analyze performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and training programs.

Reliability:

  • Enhance facility reliability through continuous monitoring and improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct root cause analysis to identify and address reliability issues, and develop and implement a robust fleetwide lessons learned program.
  • Prepare outage cost analysis reports and develop action plans to enhance reliability.
  • Review inventory and supply chain options for equipment, spare parts, and fuel to limit the impact of generation.

Generation Outage Coordination:

  • Coordinate generation planned outages, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and execute outage activities efficiently and safely.
  • Outage activities including work scopes, procurement liaison to select appropriate contractors, and all other outage related planning as assigned.

Benchmarking:

  • Benchmark performance against industry standards and implement best practices.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement based on benchmarking data and work with Generation Leadership to implement consistent changes across all sites.
  • Compare facility structures and operational practices across different levels to identify best practices and adapting to new technologies.
  • Implement standardized procedures across all facilities.

Continuous Improvement and Cross-Functional Facility Alignment:

  • Facilitate alignment between various departments to ensure cohesive operational strategies.
  • Initiate and manage other generation improvement processes for process control systems and equipment reliability.
  • Promote collaboration and knowledge sharing across teams.
  • Align procedures related to safety, operational maintenance, and root cause analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Spearhead initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, safety, and reliability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Energy Management, Business, or from an Engineering Accreditation Commission/ Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) accredited engineering program; and 10 years of related power generation or petrochemical plant operations, maintenance or engineering experience; or
  • An associate’s degree in Power/Process Plan Technology or related field; and 12 years’ experience in power generation or petrochemical plant operations, maintenance or engineering; or
  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED); and 14 years’ in power generation or petrochemical plant operations, maintenance or engineering.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • A valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

This position requires constant sitting; and occasional lifting/carrying up to fifty pounds, pushing/pulling up to twenty pounds, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing. This position uses office equipment and field tools. This position also requires finger dexterity, good vision/hearing, hand coordination, and the ability to perform close work, analyze data/reports, conduct research, and implement recommendations. This position occasionally works in areas of dirt/dust, fumes, chemicals, extreme heat/cold, vibration, noise, and poor ventilation. This position must be respirator qualified and able to operate a motor vehicle.
