POSITION PURPOSE

The Assistant Controller is responsible for supporting the Controller in managing the organization's accounting operations, including financial reporting, internal controls, policy development, and compliance with accounting standards. This role oversees the general ledger, accounts payable, fixed assets, and financial reporting functions. The Assistant Controller plays a key role in driving process improvement, ensuring accurate and timely reporting, and supporting audits and ERP system initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Lead the preparation and consolidation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP.
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and ensure adherence across the organization.
  • Research and interpret new accounting standards and provide guidance on technical accounting issues.
  • Maintain and monitor the organization’s system of internal controls, identifying opportunities to improve compliance and efficiency.
  • Oversee the operations of General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, Financial Reporting, and Cost Allocation functions.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting for internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies.
  • Support audit processes by serving as a primary liaison with internal and external auditors.
  • Participate in the implementation and ongoing maintenance of ERP systems; streamline accounting processes through automation and standardization.
  • Identify and develop new management reports that enhance visibility into financial performance.
  • Support the VP & Controller with special projects, strategic initiatives, and information requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field and a minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in accounting or financial reporting roles.
  • CPA designation required.
  • 3+ years of supervisory or managerial experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Demonstrated experience in financial statement preparation and internal controls.
  • Occasional travel.
  • A valid driver’s license.


This position is/may be identified as a Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) related position, which may allow physical and/or logical access to Bulk Electric System (BES) cyber related assets or systems. This position may allow access to privileged information relating to such assets or systems. This position will be required to strictly adhere to all Basin Electric policies, procedures, and programs applicable to the Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in accounting or finance.
  • Experience in the utility industry or with regulatory accounting (e.g., FERC, RUS).
  • Knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) control environments.
  • Strong ERP experience (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or similar platforms).
  • Proven technical accounting research skills.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

This position requires frequent sitting, standing, and walking; and occasional reaching below and above shoulder level, use of keyboard/computer, bending, kneeling, lifting up to 10 pounds, and pushing or pulling up to 20 pounds. It also requires finger dexterity and hand coordination. This position requires good hearing and vision, and the ability to speak.
