Basin Electric is a member-owned and member-driven cooperative that employs approximately 1,900 individuals across multiple states, including North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Employees at Basin Electric and our subsidiaries—Dakota Gasification Company, Dakota Coal Company, and Montana Limestone Company—are dedicated to providing essential power and products to rural America.
Dakota Gasification Company, a for-profit subsidiary of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, owns and operates the Great Plains Synfuels Plant near Beulah, North Dakota. The Synfuels Plant is the only commercial-scale coal gasification facility in the United States that manufactures natural gas.
